"This whisper-quiet crossbow, an over-under semi-auto weapon, requires accuracy to compensate for its low damage when assassinating targets."

Auto Crossbow description

The Auto Crossbow, also known as the Auto-Cross, is a special weapon in Far Cry 4. The weapon is unlocked after completing City of Pain (Mission), after which it can be purchased for ₭140,000 (₭105,000 with certain perks) or Longinus gives it for free after liberating all 17 Bell Towers. Since there are just 10 Bell Towers in southern Kyrat, unlocking it for free would require reaching northern Kyrat, specifically, require completing the mission A Key to the North, which is much harder than simply purchasing it after completing City of Pain. It can also be found in the prison mine in the mission Don't Look Down, in one of the two weapon caches before arriving at the bell tower.

The Auto-Cross uses its own type of unique ammunition, Bolts, which have a much flatter trajectory and higher velocity than Arrows. This flatter trajectory, along with the attachment of an optical sight allows the player to snipe enemies at much longer ranges, and more easily, than the two bows. It is also classified as a side-arm, so it can be used whilst in a vehicle.

The Auto-Cross is excellent for stealth kills. It is also quite powerful, despite its description stating otherwise, killing most Royal Army soldiers with one shot to the torso, however it requires 2 shots to torso with most Royal Guard soldiers. By the time it can be unlocked, a significant number of enemies are armoured, and, as with all weapons, require a headshot to kill quickly; to remedy this, a quick, double-fire with the Auto-Cross, to the head, is able to execute most Royal Guard soldiers.

When used as part of a careful, and well-planned, stealthy assault, the Auto-Cross is extremely effective, being even more versatile and with a much higher damage output than the two bows, with its only disadvantage over the bows being its inability to use incendiary or explosive arrows.

  • The Auto-Cross' design is similar to the BZ19, seen due to its evident helical magazine, but lacking a stock, so it is a side-arm.
