"SUGAR AND YARA

This nineteenth century sugar mill pinion was used in a factory near Segunda.  Between the 16th and 19th centuries there were dozens of sugar plantations in the region.  Caribbean settlers used rum as their currency in the New World.  Initially they called it rumbullion ", an old English word meaning" brawl ", because the excessive consumption of the liquor made it violent. The Spanish settlers of Yara saw an opportunity to get rich and enslaved an unspecified number of people in East Africa to put them to work on sugar cane fields, to produce the main thanks to the distillation of rum: sugar."

"ESCAPE ATTEMPTS

Between 1893 and 1916, the citizens of Yara tried to escape in every way, even with small boats like this one.  After the slave revolts, Spain sent General Diego Caballero to avoid further revolts in Yara The result was a brutal oppression of the rural proletariat, mainly former slaves, accompanied by a political and financial collapse of the country."

This cannon fired a shot on March 15, 1916, when Yara officially became independent of Spain, with the help of Governor Geraldo Montaño, a patriot from Yara."

This statue was donated to the city of Segunda by King Philip III of Spain in 1609, as a demonstration of his support for the citizens, victims of the flu.  He had to give hope in dark temples."
