Unlike other Far Cry installments, Far Cry does not allow the player to choose factions. The protagonist, Jack Carver, is a former Special Forces soldier who is, without his knowledge, drawn into a CIA operation to infiltrate Dr. Krieger's illegal research in Micronesia. Washed ashore, he soon meets Doyle who offers help. Jack, having no better option, follows his instructions and sets out to rescue his lost companion, Valerie. After saving her from the mercenaries, he learns that both Val an Doyle are CIA agents. Although reluctant, he cooperates with them hoping to return home alive.
