The world of Far Cry, set in Micronesia, consists of tropical islands. Access to different parts of a map is limited and depends on which level is currently loaded. Some maps confine the player by surrounding his playing area with mountains; others, where the open sea can be accessed, utilize a helicopter which kills the player if he tries to cross the bounds.
Usually multiple consecutive levels take place on the same island, although the island can differ between levels in terms of shape, size, or water level. It is, therefore, impossible to extract a map that accurately represents the island on which a series of levels takes place. For example, the levels Fort and Pier are set on the same island, but in Fort the part where Pier will later take place is missing some terrain.
Islands[]
Most major islands in the game bear names which are known from the main as well as Mercenary dialogs.
Alura[]
The game begins in an old Japanese bunker in the northern part of Alura which is connected to the rest of the island by a very shallow stretch of water. Thus, it could be argued whether these two are separate islands or one. Alura is the site of the wrecked Akagi carrier used as a helicopter refueling pad by the Mercenaries, and a small training camp.
Cabatu[]
Cabatu is where the Mercenaries established a facility with a satellite dish in a WW2-era fort on the highest point of the island to control radio signals across the archipelago and prevent detection by authorities.
Amulong[]
Amulong is notable for its extensive caves, one of which is used as a station for pumping water from the sea. Another cave once served as a bunker for the Japanese during World War II, but has since been turned into a laboratory by the Krieger Corporation as part of the Treetop Research Facility. The Bunker Lab is separated by a deep canyon from the supervision area where Trigens are kept for observation in a natural habitat.
Jacutan[]
Jacutan is a very large island which abounds in Trigens as it is the location of the "Archive" – a complex where test subjects are stored. The opposite side of the island has a facility for generating steam from ground water.
Tower islands[]
A group of four unnamed islands where three antenna masts are used to block external transmissions after the destruction of the Communications Center on Cabatu. In addition to the towers on the islands, there is also a mobile backup antenna on a freighter anchored off the northernmost island.
Pagao[]
Pagao is possibly the largest island in the archipelago. It is characterized by its swampy terrain and a broad river meandering through a steep valley. It is the location of Krieger's main compound where the mutagen is manufactured, and thus the most important one. North of the river there are ruins of an ancient temple with an underground complex and stone monuments.
Volcano island[]
An unnamed island which features an active volcano. Krieger has his central offices next to the volcano. A vast lagoon separates the northern part from the southern one. This is the last island to be visited by the player, from which Jack and Valerie return to civilization.
