Fat Boys (called Mutant Big in game files) are a type of Trigens, mutated from humans. They come in two variants, armed with a rocket launcher and unarmed.

Physical description

Fat Boys owe their name to their stout build, abnormally thick musculature, and extraordinary height, which also causes them to make loud stomps while moving. Most of the times they are encountered wielding special rocket launchers implanted into their right arms. Less often, they appear with just their bare hands to fight with. Similar to Squeakers, they wear military-style trousers and boots, which suggests that they were soldiers before their transformation. Their chest is bare as it is reserved for a glowing implant which is their most vulnerable spot.

Behavior

The armed Fat Boys have an unlimited amount of rockets, which travel at a relatively low speed comparable to the Rocket Launcher. Both types of Fat Boys can strike with their claws if an enemy gets too close, taking a serious amount of health away from him.

These are the only Trigens that can speak, and they will growl things such as "You're goin' down!" and "It's all over for you!" when in combat, similar to the Mercenaries. Ironically, they are the least intelligent of all the Trigens, as best seen in the occasional instances where they may get stuck in a doorway and instead of taking another way around will attempt to get free and kill Jack by repeatedly firing their launcher, killing themselves with blasts from their own missiles in the process, since their shoulders are too wide to allow their arms (and thus the launcher) to fit through a doorway. If presented with a situation in which they cannot reach Jack, they will simply shoot in his general direction until something happens.

They never flank enemies and always go for them head on. Should a fellow Trigen die, they will sometimes say "Someone’s killed him!" even if they are seen drowning. However, despite their shortcomings in common sense, they do tend to patrol and inspect areas that have unusual sounds, and will alert the other Trigens. They are also very deadly in confined areas, especially if Jack encounters a group of them.

They are characterized by their loud, lumbering footsteps.

Behind the scenes

Fat Boys seemingly evolved from the early concept of a heavy mutant called Mutant Cover, which in itself might be a spiritual successor to the X-Isle era big aliens that share it's overall bodytype and size. They were originally supposed to use different weapons, such as homing rockets, miniguns, and shotguns. The voicelines Fat Boys use are taken from a unused Mutant Cover voicebank still present in-game.
