Guard Posts are small checkpoints in Far Cry 2, set up on the roads and riversides of the Unnamed African Country by the UFLL and the APR. There are 57 Guard Posts scattered throughout the map.

Description[]

Guard Posts are hardened checkpoints, protected by sandbags, improvized gun emplacements, and sometimes guard towers that house snipers or rocket soldiers providing overwatch. They are staffed by a handful of enemies, usually 3-5 troops. Guard Posts typically have 2-3 vehicles parked in their area, mostly Assault Trucks and Cars if landlocked (some of them being replaced with Utility Trucks and ATVs if the Fortune's Pack DLC is installed), and also Swamp Boats, if located on a riverside. Guard Posts also contain a varying amount of supplies, such as ammo, explosives, fuel, or first aid kits.

Scouting Guard Posts[]

Guard Posts show up with a locked icon on the map until players "scout" them, which means finding the primary supply (an Ammo Pile, Explosives Pile, Fuel Pile, or Syrettes) stashed on the Guard Post. The supplies become "scouted" once players resupply from the caches, mark them with the Monocular, or stand right next to them. Some of the Guard Posts have the cache in less-than-obvious locations, which may make it necessary to mount an attack on the checkpoint to find them.

Tips[]

  • Unless you want to resupply at a Guard Post, it is recommended to avoid them or drive through them quickly. Many checkpoints can be avoided by driving off-road, but quickly driving through them is also a viable tactic in the Northern District and on lower Reputation levels. It is unwise to waste your ammo or syrettes attacking Guard Posts unless you want to scout them or resupply from their caches.
  • Starting from Act 2 in the Southern District, snipers in elevated positions may be replaced with rocket launcher troops once the players' Reputation reaches Level 2 or 3. Rocket troops are extremely dangerous when approaching the Guard Post with a vehicle, so make sure to scout checkpoints carefully, and take them out before taking on the checkpoint.
  • UFLL and APR troops start using Mk 19-mounted assault trucks in the Southern District on higher Reputation levels, which could make speeding through the Guard Posts extremely dangerous should they decide to pursue you. Therefore, make sure your second best Buddy is rescue-ready, in case the drive-through goes horribly wrong.

Trivia[]

  • Far Cry 2 received heavy criticism on its flawed Guard Post-mechanic, namely because of the fact that cleared checkpoints cannot be permanently liberated like the Safe Houses and are constantly respawned with enemies instead. This proved to be a major factor in reworking the Guard Post mechanic into the Outpost-system seen in later games of the series.
