The Map Editor once again appears in Far Cry 4, which acts similar to Far Cry 2 and Far Cry 3.
The map editor has been changed quite a lot from Far Cry 3's editor, and has a variety of new features. The most major change is the addition of Modifiers, which act as gameplay-changing selections that can range from changing the map's gravity, what skills the player has, if they have infinite ammo or not, making them immune to damage, countdown timers, getting detected on sight, and much more. There are now less categories of items to choose from as compared to Far Cry 3, as many objects got lumped together into bigger categories, reducing menu clutter. Controls have been changed and streamlined for easier use (especially on controllers) and the UI is much bigger and easier to navigate. The search function has been lost, and many objects have been totally removed, such as interactable doors, distant/LOD foliage, preset clumps of rocks/foliage, and more.
The ability to start a rainstorm is also gone. However, there are now ambient sound effects that can be chosen to play quietly in the background of a map at all times, such as birds chirping, Shangri-La's ambient tracks, the sounds of a village, and even making the map totally silent. Climbing/grapple points have also been added from singleplayer, and most enemy types are also able to be fought. However, all of the elite/commander versions of enemies are missing, and so are Royal Guard Hunters. DLC content also is not present, meaning Valley of The Yetis content cannot be placed, such as Yetis. (There are mods for all of this on the PC version that let these previously-missing objects be added into maps, and those modded maps even work and can be uploaded to the Ubisoft servers for PC just fine.)
Many singleplayer exclusive objects also do not appear, such as certain buildings, textures, objects and more. One rather notable example is helicopter reinforcements for enemies, which do not appear at all in the map editor without mods on PC. Several snowy variations of objects are missing as well, such as snowy Ammo Caches. Most rare animals are also missing, however a few can be spawned and act just like they do in the Kyrati Fashion Week missions from singleplayer. (The rare Black Wolf's bite doesn't give the hallucinations like it does in singleplayer, however.)
All valid, uploaded maps can be favourited, given ratings, downloaded and edited by anyone. However, once a map is uploaded, it cannot be deleted. Maps can be played alone, or with a friend in Co-Op. When a map is beaten, a random map can be optionally chosen to be played next. Custom co-op lobbies can also be started, allowing up to four selected maps to be played back-to-back, with the aforementioned random map option. There are several Ubisoft published maps as well, and they can also be edited and reuploaded.
As a side note, while there are modifiers to turn off all HUD elements, it is functionally useless, as any disabled HUD elements can be freely turned on and off at will.
There is currently four gamemodes for map editor:
- Assault - Eliminate all enemies. There are no alarms, just kill everyone. Animals and allies can be placed down, and can be set to infinitely respawn, however they will take away from the overall enemy A.I budget. Around 60 enemies can be placed on the map.
- Hunt - Eliminate all animals. Human allies and enemies can be placed, and set to infinitely respawn. However, they eat into the A.I budget massively. Nearly 200 animals can be placed.
- Outpost - Similar to Assault, except outpost Alarms from singleplayer can be placed around. Players can have up to five waves of enemy A.I to spawn into the battlefield. Around 60 enemies can be placed on the map.
- Extraction - Reach the escape point. No enemies or animals have to be fought, and can be ignored as long as the player somehow gets to the extraction point. Around 60 enemies can be placed on the map.
There are 34 loadouts to choose from, all of which are detailed here. The preset loadouts are listed below. There are four "custom" loadouts, which are simply all four levels of the empty holster. This can allow players to pick up to a maximum of four weapons of any kind they want if they are placed throughout the map, or dropped by enemies. All loadouts except Melee Only and the four empty holster loadouts carry grenades, molotovs and throwing knives, but no bait. C4 and Mines are also carried in said loadouts. However, just like in previous map editors, there are no working stores or loot chests, meaning weapons cannot be customized freely with attachments and camouflages. Money can be picked up from dead enemies, however it serves no purpose. One building does have two functioning loot chests, however they are pointless. Signature weapons also do not appear at all, along with the Harpoon Gun being missing.
