The Royalists were a faction existing before Far Cry 4. They were tasked with protecting the royal family and Kyrat, and opposed the Nationalists in the First Kyrati Civil War.

According to Divya Kandala, in 1825, offering money and arms in exchange for the use of their army, the British attempt an invasion of India with Kyrati soldiers on the front lines. When this fails, the Kyrati people turn on the monarchy that sold them out to a foreign power. The Royalists stayed loyal to the Kyrati royal family despite ever increasing tensions and hostilities especially from 1900 onward.

The post-colonial Kyrat economy was dependent on gold mining, but most gold mines were already exhausted in the 1960's as KEO went bankrupt. Economic hardships during the following decades intensified opposition to Kyrat monarchy and fueled the Nationalists cause.

In 1984, the Nationalists started First Kyrati Civil War against the monarchy and naturally the Royalists fought against them. The Nationalists rapidly advanced across Northern Kyrat, further strengthened by foreign mercenaries and a flood of American-made weapons.

After being dealt a crippling blow by the Nationalists who successfully killed the royal family in 1985, Mohan Ghale rallied the Royalists to continue fighting, but by 1986 the Nationalists grew too strong for them.

Then a triad empire led by Pagan Min and Yuma Lau came to Kyrat and allied themselves with them, claiming to desire the coronation of a distant relative of Kyrat's deceased king. After months of bloody fighting, they stormed the Royal Palace and defeated the Nationalists. However, Min suddenly took-over, killing the heir, initiating a purge of the royal family and the Royalists. Some of Pagan Min forces refused to betray the Royalists however, they saved many survivors and stood by Mohan side.

The remnants of the Royalists continued to resist Pagan Min's reign and started the Golden Path in 1987, thus began Second Kyrati Civil War that rage on to 21st century.
