Steam is the eighth level in Far Cry.

Overview

Valerie tasks Jack with destroying a structure called "the Regulator". They are supposed to meet at the Krieger's main Archives when that is finished. She departs while Jack heads in the opposite direction.

Doyle advises Jack to acquire special night vision goggles kept by a local commander as they might be useful in navigating through some dark areas of the Regulator. This is an optional objective, however, as the player can capture a patrol boat arriving near the player's position at the start of the level and move around the beach in the westerly direction. This alternative route spares one an encounter with swarms of mercenaries.

Before Jack enters the Regulator, he has to find the foreman of the Workers at the steam generator and examine his plans to determine where the critical junctions of the Regulator are located. After killing the foreman, he reads the blueprints and tells Doyle that the main junctions are in sections 4, 5, and 7.

The level ends when Jack comes near the door to the complex.

Trivia

• In the Polish version, this level is titled "Nocny łowca" (Night hunter), and in Russian: "Парогенератор" (Steam generator). Perhaps the translators decided the Polish word "para" or Russian "пар" (both meaning steam) was too simple and dull for a level title.
• In the map editor, Jack's character model can be seen holding the phone in the room where the goggles are kept. This indicates that originally a cutscene was supposed to be played upon acquiring the goggles.
• Originally, Steam was supposed to be the fifth level, since Training was merged with Carrier, Fort with Pier, and Research with Treehouse.
