Viet Cong soldiers, interrogating James Kenneth

The Viet Cong, also known as the The People's Liberation Armed Forces of South Vietnam (PLAF), are one of the main enemy factions of the Far Cry 5 expansion Hours of Darkness, and are based on the real-world belligerent faction of the Vietnam War of the same name. This page also contains description of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), also known as North Vietnamese Army (NVA), who were supported by the Viet Cong during Vietnam War.

Background[]

The Viet Cong were a communist rebel organization who fought against the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (backed by US military in southern Vietnam) and the United States of America and were feared for their guerilla tactics during the Vietnam War. Their main goal was to unify southern Vietnam with northern Vietnam.

The People's Army of Vietnam were the national military of Democratic Republic of Vietnam (in northern Vietnam). They had the same goal as Viet Cong. They are better trained and equipped than Viet Cong guerrillas, in the game, their soldiers and officers supposedly took command of Viet Cong forces.

Far Cry 5: Hours of Darkness[]

In "Hours of Darkness," a helicopter containing the crew of the Python 2 gunship was shot down by the Viet Cong, who then captured the surviving crew. Throughout the expansion, the Viet Cong will often be seen on patrol accompanied by soldiers of the PAVN (NVA). The Viet Cong in game wear a "Black Pajama" uniform, which was similar to the bà ba clothing of rural Vietnamese farmers at the time.

The PAVN (NVA) act as the secondary antagonists in "Hours of Darkness." Like the Vietcong, NVA soldiers are often seen on foot patrolling throughout the valley and they use nearly the same weaponry. Unlike the Viet Cong, they wear green uniforms and can also seen piloting helicopters and driving trucks.

Trivia[]

  • If a commander is alerted; he will proceed to run for a bunker, and if he is not eliminated in a timely manner, he will de-spawn; failing the mission objective and counting against 100% completion.
  • The Viet Cong and NVA (PAVN) are the first faction to appear directly in a Far Cry title that belong to a real-life faction.
  • Being a real-life faction, their portrayal is rife with historical inaccuracies. Since everything in the story was from the imagination and memories of Wendell Redler, he may have exaggerated or remembered it wrong, for he cannot remember all details after several decades.
    • It's also likely that he may not being entirely honest to The Junior Deputy while telling the story.
  • They are arguably the second strongest enemies faction in Far Cry series only after the Privateers and Royal Army but far behind Fuerzas Nacionales de Defensa in Yara due to nearly lack of manpower but made up with their guerilla skill and stealthy similar to Libertad, Royal Army Hunters and Royal Guard Hunters. They have nearly same set equipment with FND only in term of artillery like the AA Guns, their transportation helicopter and army jeep and their weapon like AK-47, M133 but the PAVN are far more well-equipped and professional armour set similar to the Royal Guard and FND Special Forces compared to the poor equipped Viet Cong (National Liberation Front) in South Vietnam. They are also quickly annihilated your allies if you don't act of saving them quickly no matter if they are Viet Cong or PAVN; this forcing the player to restart the progress.
