Yolanda Rodríguez is the wife of Gabriel Castillo which makes her the first lady of Yara, mother of Antón Castillo and grandmother of Diego Castillo, and José Castillo. María Marquessa is the secret mother of Diego Castillo, making Yolanda the mother-in-law of María. Her son Antón Castillo speaks highly of her, and unlike his father, has nothing bad to say about her.
In her youth, she was a renowned jazz singer, later on she married Gabriel and gave birth to Antón in 1954. When her husband Gabriel was executed during the Revolution of 1967, she raised Antón alone and made sure her son knew that his father had lost everything he built by those who killed him.[1] When Antón was 13 years old, he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in Yara's tobacco fields, but she still raised him and educated him until his adulthood, as he had to work on tobacco fields and didn't receive education from schools. When Antón finished his sentence at 28 years old, he stayed in touch with her until she passed away from breast cancer in 2007. Antón also found out he has blood cancer (leukemia) within the same year. This may have drove him to ruthless and extreme methods in speeding up Viviro production for further researches in curing cancers, as well as giving birth to Diego with María Marquessa, making Yolanda have a grandson and daughter-in-law whom she never knew.
One of the historical notes on the "Torre del León" reports this.
"YOLANDA RODRÍGUEZ, YARA'S NIGHTINGONE
Yolanda Rodríguez was a national treasure. A renowned jazz singer, her music made Yara's voice heard all over the world. Yolanda stood by her husband, Gabriel Castillo, at both his proclamation and execution. After raising her son Antón alone, she died of breast cancer in 2007."
